TITANIC Lifeboat Finds Temporary Refuge at Self Storage by TITAN CONTAINERS

    3 min read

In the world of shipping containers, where storage solutions are as diverse as the items they contain, there are moments when the contents can be truly extraordinary. Such is the case with the SS Nomadic Titanic Lifeboat, which has recently found a temporary home at Self-Storage by TITAN Containers in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This remarkable piece of history, entrusted to the care of TITAN Containers, underscores the trust placed in the company's expertise to protect and preserve a maritime relic of unparalleled significance.

A Precious Artifact: The SS Nomadic Lifeboat

The SS Nomadic, a jewel of maritime history, was crafted by the renowned shipyard Harland & Wolff between 1910 and 1911. As the sole surviving White Star Line vessel in the world, the Nomadic boasts a storied past and once played a pivotal role in transatlantic travel. Though a fraction of the size of its famous sisters, the Olympic and Titanic, the Nomadic shared many luxurious features and served as a tender ship, ferrying passengers to the larger liners anchored in deeper waters.

Central to the Nomadic's story are its lifeboats, notably Lifeboat No. 2. These lifeboats, fashioned in the same era as the ship itself, were designed by Roderick Chisholm, Chief Draughtsman at Harland & Wolff. Built in the classic clinker style, they featured overlapping planks secured by copper rivets.

Lifeboat No. 2, alongside its sibling No. 1, had the capacity to carry 28 passengers. These lifeboats were essential safety assets during the Nomadic's tenure as a tender ship, as well as when it served as a troop carrier and minesweeper during both World Wars. Yet, in the 1970s, as the Nomadic underwent its transformation into a floating restaurant in Paris, the lifeboats were separated from the vessel.

Tragically, Lifeboat No. 1 met its demise, but Lifeboat No. 2 embarked on a different journey. In 2007, the newly formed Nomadic Preservation Society came to its rescue, setting in motion an arduous process of restoration and conservation.

Reunion of Legends: SS Nomadic and Lifeboat No. 2

After years of dedicated restoration and conservation work, the SS Nomadic reopened to the public as a museum ship in 2013. Ownership subsequently transitioned to the Maritime Belfast Trust in 2015, becoming an integral part of the Titanic Belfast visitor experience. This move allowed visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the ship's opulent interiors.

Today, the Nomadic Preservation Society has made a generous donation by entrusting Lifeboat No. 2 to the Maritime Belfast Trust, with the aim of reuniting it with the SS Nomadic. This poignant reunion bears witness to the trust vested in those who have tirelessly strived to safeguard the ship's historical legacy.

A Temporary Haven at TITAN Containers Self-Storage

In this remarkable tale, an important role has been played by TITAN Containers. The company's reputation for secure and reliable storage solutions has been pivotal in safeguarding the SS Nomadic Lifeboat until permanent display arrangements can be finalised.

As the SS Nomadic and Lifeboat No. 2 prepared to take centre stage during the Maritime Festival on September 9th and 10th, 2023, visitors had the extraordinary opportunity to witness the culmination of a trust-filled journey. The lifeboat stood alongside the SS Nomadic, serving as a vivid reminder of the enduring legacy of these iconic vessels.

In the ever-evolving world of shipping containers, this remarkable story underscores the power of trust and collaboration in preserving our maritime past, ensuring it remains accessible to future generations.
